Lake
Superior has a pleasant effect on local
temperatures. The lake modifies local
temperatures resulting in cooler summers
and warmer winters. Lake Superior is
often referred to as the "Great Air
Conditioner" for its ability to temper
the summer climate in Duluth. The
proximity of the lake to the city also
results in lower frequency of severe
storms.
The Duluth climate is mild during the
summer, when temperatures tend to be in
the 60's- 70's,(F) and extremely cold in
the winter when temperatures hover
around 10(F) degrees!
The warmest month of the year is July
with an average maximum temp of 75(F),
and the coldest being January with an
average minimum of 1.1 degree F
Temperature variations between night &
day tend to be fairly limited during
summer, with a difference that can reach
17 degree F, and in the winter an
average difference of 18F.
Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed
throughout the year, with the wettest
month being July with an average
rainfall of 3.73 inches.
